New Braunfels TX Real Estate, New Braunfels ISD, Comal ISD

In 1991, the Texas Historical Commission designated the City of New Braunfels as a Texas Main Street City. As part of downtown revitalization efforts, the City Main Street Department coordinates resources to install antique lights, trees, brick pavers and new sidewalks along downtown streets and flower islands surrounding Main Plaza. The Department works through volunteer citizen groups including the Downtown Association, the Main Street Board and its sub-committees as well as individual property and business owners.

Dozen Distinctive Destinations

Annual List Promotes Heritage Tourism

Washington, DC (March 2, 2005) – Founded in 1845 by German immigrants seeking a new life in the Texas Hill Country, New Braunfels (pop. 36,500) balances Old World charm with modern amenities – and offers them up with genuine Lone Star hospitality. Although it is located between the big cities of San Antonio and Austin, New Braunfels maintains its small-town spirit, celebrating its unique heritage and cultural traditions through German-flavored music, food and festivals such as the Wurstfest, billed as a “10-day salute to sausage.”

This active Main Street community boasts a historic downtown district dotted with interesting buildings that conceal comfortable B-and-Bs. The downtown area offers a variety of shops and galleries (plus a mouth-watering array of bakeries and restaurants), most of them housed in historic buildings. Beloved local landmarks include the Comal County Courthouse, a rugged Romanesque Revival masterpiece built in 1898; the c. 1846 Stephen Klein House, an example of stone-and-timber fachwerk construction; the Sophienburg Museum & Archives, with thousands of documents and artifacts in its collections; and Landa Park, a 196-acre oasis where visitors can swim, golf, picnic or ride on a miniature train. Kids of all ages will love exploring Natural Bridge Caverns, a few miles west of town, and cooling off on the banks of the Comal River at the famous Schlitterbahn, the top-rated water park in the nation.

For these reasons, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest private, nonprofit preservation organization, today named New Braunfels, Tex., to its 2005 list of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual list of unique and lovingly preserved communities in the United States. It was selected from nearly 80 destinations in 44 states that were nominated by individuals, preservation organizations and local communities.

“New Braunfels is a unique town that prides itself on rich culture and tradition,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Visitors of all ages will enjoy the lively spirit, southern hospitality and host of interesting activities offered here.”

This is the sixth time the National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced a list of Dozen Distinctive Destinations. To date, there are 72 Dozen Distinctive Destinations located in 36 states throughout the country. To see a complete list, visit www.nationaltrust.org. In each community, residents have taken forceful action to protect their town’s character and sense of place. Whether by enacting a local preservation law to protect historic buildings against demolition, rewriting zoning codes to prevent commercial sprawl, removing regulatory barriers to downtown housing, making downtown areas more walkable, enacting design standards, or taking some other major step that demonstrates a strong commitment to their town, residents have worked hard to preserve the historic and scenic assets of their communities, with rewards that transcend town limits.
